Our Favourite Wedding Venues in Mauritius + What You Need to Know

An iconic tropical destination for both weddings and honeymoons, the idyllic island of Mauritius is quite literally paradise on earth. Nestled within the Indian Ocean, it benefits from warm crystal clear waters, soft white sandy beaches and lush tropical backdrops, making it one of the most heavenly places to get hitched. Known for its perfect balance of decadent relaxation and unique experiences, excursions and activities, it’s the ideal choice for any couple who fancies a wedding with equal parts chill and adventure.

Below we’ve gone into detail about some of the things you need to know before choosing where to get married in Mauritius, along with some of our all-time favourite hotels to help get you inspired.

Choosing a location

Each area of the island offers something slightly different, so it’s good to have a little bit of background knowledge before beginning your venue search.

The East Coast - This is the quieter, more serene part of the island and is typically home to some of the most luxurious hotels, with many of the area’s best beaches found here. This coastline tends to get a good breeze running through it too, taking the edge off some of those longer days in the sun.

The West Coast - This coastline is a little more buzzy than the East, and is home to a larger number of towns and resorts. Some of the best coral reefs can be found here, making it ideal if you fancy an excursion or two outside of the hotel, and a bit more of an action packed honeymoon.

The Mainland - Perfect for those who love to explore the great outdoors, the lush, tropical mainland is filled with cultural big hitters and natural delights. Expect plenty of waterfalls, native wildlife and the famed Black River Gorges national park.

Legal Requirements

If you’re getting married at a resort, they’ll likely have a dedicated in-house wedding coordinator who’ll be able to walk you through this, but it’s best to have an idea of what you might need before starting the process.

For a civil, legal ceremony you’ll need to provide certain documents to comply with Mauritian Law. These documents include passports, birth certificates, divorce or death certificates (if this applies) and proof of your legal residence or tourist status. You’ll also need to file a Notice of Marriage with the Civil Status Division at least two weeks prior to the wedding. After your wedding ceremony, you’ll be provided with a marriage certificate, with the option of requesting an international version that you can go onto use in your home country.

For religious ceremonies, you’ll need to contact the religious institution you’re looking to get married in directly, and they’ll be able to let you know their specific requirements.

Best Time of Year to Get Married

For the best weather on your wedding day, it’s recommended you get married during the dry season, which runs from May to December and ideally avoid Cyclone Season which lasts from January until March. Typically the peak tourist seasons are from October to December and July to August, so try to avoid these and opt for months just outside such as April and May. This will help ensure you get the ideal balance between good weather, a competitive price and quieter resorts and hotels.

Now you have that all important knowledge under your belt, below we’ve shared three of our favourite Mauritian resorts to help get you inspired.
